ASERA 49 Conference 2018
ASERA 49
The Marriott, Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia
26-29 June 2018
Join us at the 2018 Australasian Science Education (ASERA) conference to be part of a collegial science education community at the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort and Spa on the Gold Coast, 26-29 June 2018.
Registration and accommodation booking is now open. We have secured fantastic accommodation rates - $179 per night including wifi and parking - for the conference and up to 3 days either side. Breakfast is available at the hotel for $25 pp, payable at checkout.
Join us in sunny Queensland and meet with national and international colleagues in science education.
Abstract submissions for presentations of research work in science education in formal and informal contexts are now closed.
The conference includes (a) paper presentations (comprising a 20-minute oral presentation and 20-minute discussion), and (b) poster presentations.
Free Registration For Graduate Student Volunteers
Five conference registrations have been reserved to be made available free of charge to graduate research students in science education (MEd and PhD and similar, rather than MTeach, and not in paid employment) who will agree to volunteer to support the conference. That will mean being on duty on reception desks, being assigned to session rooms to support speakers, wrangling technology or calling those who can and so on. You would still be responsible for your own travel and accommodation, so it may be particularly attractive for this living in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, but all are welcome. If you are interested, please email David Geelan d.geelan@griffith.edu.au
Optional Peer Reviewed Conference Proceedings
Some researchers need to have their work published in a peer reviewed conference proceedings volume in order to make attendance at a conference attractive, while others would prefer not to publish work in a proceedings that they intend to publish later in a journal. As a way of solving this dilemma, the Program Committee has decided to publish a proceedings volume in which participation is optional. Full papers presented at the conference will be peer reviewed and published, if their authors wish to participate. We are currently in talks with Springer Nature about publishing the proceedings volume, which would be fantastic, but if this is not possible there are other publication avenues to explore. We hope, too, that the existence of a proceedings volume will encourage more authors to write complete papers for presentation and to bring hard copies to hand out in their session at the conference. The presentation of more fully-rounded and thought-through work is a goal.
Early Bird Registration Ends 26 April
Early Bird registration for ASERA members is $550, full registration is $650, and the discount is proportional for other registration types. The Early Bird discounts end on 26 April, but the more registrations occur early, the easier the job of the Conference Committee gets in meeting deposits and making arrangements. If you know you plan to come to ASERA, please register and book your accommodation as early as possible in the year - and do beat that Early Bird deadline.
Teacher 'See Through The STEAM' Workshop
A note for university-based science education researchers: please do not register for the $40 STEAM workshop on the first evening of the conference (26 June). It will clash with our Opening Reception, but it's also not really meant for you. This is a workshop for classroom teachers, facilitated by Dr Harry Kanasa and funded by StepUp funding in Queensland, which is running in parallel with ASERA. We hope it will help to connect classroom teachers with ASERA and with research in education, and it will be classroom-focused and hands-on. If you are a university-based researcher and want to know what went on, Harry will be around and available at the conference for the rest of the week.
ECR Workshop
ASERA will run a workshop for early career researchers and late stage PhD candidates on Tuesday 26 June.
