Exploring the Changing Landscape of Science Education Research in Australia and New Zealand

We are delighted to announce the publication of “The Changing Landscape of Science Education Research in Australia and New Zealand” in our journal Research in Science Education (RiSE). The article, co-authored by Xiangyu Wang, and two members of the ASERA board, Jan van Driel and David Treagust forms part of ASERA’s broader work to map and understand the evolving landscape of science education research in our region.

Science education research in Australia and New Zealand has a long and generative history, internationally recognised for its contributions to understanding and addressing the challenges of science teaching and learning. However, this study highlights emerging pressures on the field, including increasing teaching loads, limited research funding, and challenges in succession planning. Drawing on survey responses from nearly 100 academics across Australian and New Zealand universities, the authors identify both structural barriers and staffing challenges impacting the sustainability of science education research.

Despite these concerns, the findings also reveal pockets of optimism, including new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative research approaches that could help the field continue to thrive.
